dvd run down

So there's some movies that I have gotten a while ago but for some reason haven't written anything about.

To start off I got Vanishing point a while ago, has to be over a month now. I found this movie to be rather enjoyable. It is a story about Kowalski who is transporting a car from Denver to San Francisco. He gets stoned from time to time and through most of the movie he is being chased by cops. shortly into the movie you get the feeling he really doesn't give a crap if he makes it or not. The music is great and Kowalski ends up talking to a magical guy through the radio. The radio DJ tell him the polices locations and where not to go. If you like just straight up joy rides check this movie out. For a 105min film I doubt Kowalski is even out of the car for more then 30mins during the film.

Now I watched this movie about 3 days ago. I was shocked to find this movie at future shop. They also have James Cameron's Piranha 2 but I didn't pick it up yet. I wanted to watch this movie because I think that you should always watch the original film before watching the remake. So with that you can tell that this film was made over 30 years ago. There are some plot holes and dumb scenes. When the piranhas attack it's pretty lack luster. Most of the attacks are what looks like a hunk of meat being attacked. My DVD is the Roger Corman version and has a wicked cover of a chick in a red swimsuit trying to reach the surface of the water while Piranhas try to eat her, It came with both covers. If you like old school horror films which I do check this movie out its rather enjoyable.

I also got the Ring on DVD which the film is not bad. But the main thing is that I found the sound effects like jump scare sounds are louder then them talking which I HATE! Reason is I turn it up to hear what the hell is going on and then they close a door and I jump 5 feet into the air screaming like a girl. Was the door scary no not really, which then makes all the other scares or jump scares meaningless. So I couldn't really enjoy the movie because of random sounds that kept exploding my sound system. The movie is about a women watching a tape and then getting a call telling her she will die in 7 days.

So when this movie came out I wanted to watch it because I thought the cover looked cool. A while latter I learned that this movie was dumb as hell also I watched a tiny bit of it on TV but something better came on so I never watched all of it. So I found it for really cheep I think $4 and wanted to see for myself and... ya this movie is crap. You end up not caring for anyone in this movie. There was only one person that I wanted to live and that was Thomas Jane because I liked him in punisher. I thought the part where all the animals are running to be cool not knowing what I was about to see. But when that worm thing showed up I thought okay this can be okay and then it just feel off a cliff...right when I saw the alien I thought really...that's it I was expecting a thing ripe off.

Back in the day horror films actually went for atmosphere rather then just having the sound that is so loud it makes you jump do all the work. I tend to look at films like TCM, Halloween, even Friday the 13th. Now I am not saying all jump scares are bad but a cat meowing shouldn't scare anyone or a dog barking. One thing that pissed me off about the new Friday the 13th remake was the dog scene. When the main character is standing at the door seeing if anyone is there all of a sudden a dog barks and attacks the door. So what the main character didn't hear the pissed of dog coming at him till he was already attacking the door?

I will say that everyone should check out Guillermo Del Toro don't be afraid of the dark movie it is looking really good (watch the trailer). Also make sure you keep tabs on Frankenstein which is another movie hes working on.

Chungking Express #453

So something last week I watched Chungking Express which is about two different stories around love and relationships. The tends to not give anyone a real name actually it seems they only gave the women names like May and Faye. The main characters are Cop 223 and may in story 1 and Cop 663 and Faye in story two.

The first story is about a cop called cop 223 and his girlfriend May who broke up with him on April 1st. Thinking at first it was a joke which he realizes it wasn't. He ends up buying a can of pineapple everyday with the expiration date on each can being May 1st his birthday. In the end he will either be rejoined with his love or that his relationship will have expired forever. While that is going on the story also follows a blond women that is trying to make her way in the drug world.

The second story which is my favorite and seems to be the main story. Follows Cop 663 who is also dealing with a breakup, this time with a flight attendant. On his lunch break he eats at a local snack bar where we met Faye who secretly falls for him. On cop 663's day off his Ex shows up at the snack bar wanting to give him a letter. Cop 663 not being there she gives the letter to the snack bar asking they give it to cop 663. Inside the letter Faye finds a set of keys to his apartment which leads to her breaking in to redecorate and "improve" his living situation.

When I went into watching this movie I forgot is was a Criterion film and was shocked for a split second that I had to read, missing the first few lines. I liked the first story even though I felt that it was there just to pad the movie out for the second story. making the movie 102mins long.

I really liked the second story though and would suggest watching this movie just for that story alone. Faye played by Faye Wong (I wonder if the same name is for a reason) who is just outstanding. You can't help but want them to get together. I found the parts where Faye is in cop 663's apartment to be outstanding. I found it so enjoyable seeing her try to make his life better. This music in this movie is great. I would actually buy the soundtrack to this movie and I tend to not like buying movie soundtracks. Faye Wong's cover of the song Dreams is just beautiful and addictive.

The special features are as follows:
*Commentary with Asian cinema critic Tony Rayns
*1996 episode of the British television series moving pictures featuring interviews with Wong and cinematographer Christopher Doyle
*U.S. theatrical trailer
*PLUS: A booklet featuring a new essay by critic Amy Taubin. Which the book is 6 pages.

There I finally wrote this now it is time to watch... REVANCHE!

Ufc 118 Results

So this was the card:
Lightweight Championship Frankie Edgar vs. B.J. Penn
MMA Vs Boxing Randy Couture vs. James Toney
Demian Maia vs. Mario Miranda
Kenny Florian vs. Gray Maynard
Nate Diaz vs. Marcus Davis

and this is what happened:
1) I thought Joe Lauzon will beat Gabe Ruediger via sub in the 2nd and
Lauzon defeated Ruediger via submission (armbar) at 2:01 of round 1.

2)I think Nate Diaz will beat Marcus Davis via sub in the 2nd and
Diaz defeated Davis via technical submission (guillotine choke) at 4:02 of round 3.

3Kenny Florian with beat Gray Maynard via tko ill go with the 1st and
Maynard defeated Florian via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).

4)Demian Maia will sub Mario Miranda in the 1st and
Maia defeated Miranda via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

5) This one is hard because I really want to go with the long shot but I really think the Courture will be able to close the distance and take Toney down for a lame ass Tko finish do to James taking to many punches. If Toney  KO's Randy that will be devastating. I just want to watch Toneys post fight interview with Rogan. So I guess ill say Randy Courture will beat James Toney via tko in the 1st. and
Couture defeated Toney via submission (arm-triangle choke) at 3:19 of round 1.

6) I think Bj Penn will get his title back via sub in round 4. I like Edgar as well but I just think he will be getting a mad Penn. A Penn that feels like he needs to prove that Edgar shouldn't have won the 1st fight so we will see.and
Edgar defeated Penn via unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45).

I would like to note that I did not like this card. The Joe Lauson fight was great, Nate Diaz fight was great only thing is the ref sucked. The KFlo fight was crap and boring, and the Randy fight was stupid he even got his black belt for subing a guy with no skill on the ground good job subing a guy that didn't know how to even tap...and the Bj Penn fight was boring as hell when there is no drama in a fight it is boring and after the 1st round I knew Edgar was going to win and so the last 4 round ended up just being him peppering penn with punches. So ya this figh card looked good but the night was just lame.

Naked Lunch #220

So I watched Naked Lunch last night and wow I beat even if you heard things about this movie you could still not prepare yourself for it. I loved the bugs and special effects and the costumes. The music is rather nice to listen to which is weird for this movie. I thought that the music would try to make you uncomfortable but the film does that fine without needing to. I really like Peter Weller as the character Bill Lee. I found the story to be really hard to follow though. I loved the starting and the end but I got lost in the middle.Roy Scheider Is really entertaining in this film, loved every scene he was in.

I really like David Cronenberg as a Director and this movie is well made but and this is the reason why I don't know if I like this film or not but its really depressing. Nothing nice of joyful happens in this film and so its hard to watch. From what I know Peter Weller gets high off of second hand smoke from the bug powder. So he sees a bug and it tall him (FYI this is the talking ass part) that hes a secret agent and his mission is to kill his wife. From here the movie just starts to go he ends up tripping like crazy for the rest of the movie. He thinks that his typewriter is a bug at time and a early scene show him showing his friend what he thinks is a plane ticket but his friend just sees a tube of bug poison.

Disc one:
*Audio commentary featuring Cronenberg and actor Peter Weller
Disc two:
*Naked Making Lunch, a London Weekend Television documentary about the making of the film
*Illustrated essay about the special effect in Naked Lunch by Jody Duncan, editor of Cinefex magazine, featuring artifacts from Cronenberg's archive
*Film stills gallery
*A collection of original marketing materials
*William S. Burroughs audio recording of excerpts from Naked Lunch
*A collection of archival stills of William S. Burroughs from The Allen Ginsberg Trust
*32-page booklet featuring essays by film critic Janet Maslin, Chris Rodley, Gary Indiana, and a piece by William S. Burroughs

Walkabout #10

So last night I watched another one of the Criterion's I got. I enjoyed this film not one of my favorites though. I just didn't fully understand it. Going in I thought this was a kids adventure film which looking back on the film I feel stupid now. The movie starts off with the two kids (older sisters and a little boy) walking home then they are in a car driving into the middle of no where to have a picnic. When they stop the little boy gets out and runs around playing with his toys, the sister sets up the picnic. Out of no where you hear a shot fired camera shows you that its the father trying to kill his daughter and his son. The two kids fun and hide behind a rock and that father grabs a gas can lights the car on fire and shoots himself in the head. From there the two of them venture into the wilderness. Now I have no idea why the father tried to kill them and why they run off and not just stick to the road they came on?

Latter on they show a research team with a group of guys and one women and they are all swarming over the one women showing that they only have one thought on there mind. I am not sure what it is trying to show but I am sure it is showing what we think are "savages" are actually in fact not and the research team are the savages looking at the one women as a object.

It's hard to talk about this film I found because there isn't much talking in this film. it just shows there adventure and they really don't do much. Other then that I don't know what to say. Thinking back on the movie I am actually surprised by how little amount of stuff that actually goes on during the movie. truthfully I had to go to wikipedia to read the plot on a few parts like the starting because I thought I had missed something.

On Blu-Ray this film has a really clean picture, there are some really grainy shots like when the hunters shot the animals but other then that the long distance shots of the sand hills are really nice. On the back of the DVD they mention that silent films aren't dead and that this film proves that. So if that sounds interesting to you check this film out. I would actually say having not seen a silent film fully yet that this would be a good film to work your way into the silent film genre.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas #175

First off I have to say that this Criterion DVD has to be my favorite DVD cover/ slipcover design that I own so far in the collection. I also have to say the trailer for this movie is outstanding. It really shows that making a good trailer is huge for a movie. The trailer is what made me pick this movie over any other criterion. Now for the movie it's self, I love this movie and I had never seen it before last night. I really liked Johnny Depp in this movie and Benicio Del Toro who I also really like. I watched Brazil (another Terry Gilliam film) a while ago and didn't really care for it to much way to strange for me (I want to watch it over again). I was always worried this would be the same but Depp and Del Toro performances in this movie just makes you love this movie. The only thing I am mad about is that I never saw this movie earlier. It was put out in 1998 and its taken 12 years to watch it. This is going to be one of my favorite movies I have seen so far. It was just a blast to watch and I will be watching it again this week.

Watching this movie I keep thinking that there was going to be a drug over dose scene or something that would get really depressing but it never did to me. I never thought I would love this film as much as I do. I was scared that I wasn't going to like it. I actually like this film so much I might get the bluray version as well but only if the picture is worth it.

One thing I found which just made me love this movie even more is towards the end when Johnny Depp is in the hotel trying to figure what happened last night. He enters the bedroom with the hole in the bed and if you look at the door there is a black and white picture of Che Guevara which is a character  Benicio Del Toro played in the movie CHE which came out in 2008.

On the DVD you get
Disc one:
*Three commentary tracks by Terry Gilliam, Depp and Del Toro, producer Laila Nabulsi and author Hunter S. Thompson
*Deleted Scenes with commentary by Terry Gilliam
Disc two:
*Collection of storyboards and production designs
*Stills gallery
*A selection of Hunter S. Thompson correspondence, Read on camera by Johnny Depp
*Hunter Goes to Hollywood, a short documentary video by filmmaker Wayne Ewing
*A look at the controversy over the screenwriting credit
*Trailers
*Rare materials on Oscar Zeta Acosta, the inspiration for Dr. Gonzo
*Collection of original artwork by illustrator Ralph Steadman
*Excerpt from 1996 Fear and Loathing audio CD with Maury Chaykin, Jim Jarmusch, and Harry Deam Stanton
*Fear and loathing on the road to Hollywood: A 1978 BBC documentary with Thompson and Steadman
*Plus: A booklet Featuring an essay by critic J.Hoberman and two pieces by Thompson

If you are wanting to buy this movie get this DVD version of the film. It comes with a wicked DVD case, tons of special features (three commentary tracks) and its a criterion film. Plus the picture and audio is top notch.

WEC 50: Cruz vs. Benavidez 2 Thoughts

I would like to say that I don't watch WEC I don't really have a reason its just not my choice to mma shows to watch. So I don't know much about these fighters and so I am pretty much guessing who is going to win, even though its all ways guessing. But anyways this is from looking at there records and seeing how they have won and how they have lost. So with that let begin.

Bantamweight Championship bout: Dominick Cruz (c) vs. Joseph Benavidez
Shane Roller vs. Anthony Pettis
Cub Swanson vs. Chad Mendes
Scott Jorgensen vs. Brad Pickett
Bart Palaszewski vs. Zach Micklewright

1) Bart Palaszewski will beat Zach Micklewright via Decision
2) Scott Jorgensen will beat Brad Pickett via Decision
3) Chad Mendes will beat Cub Swanson via Decision
4) Anthony Pettis will beat Shane Roller via Tko
5) Dominick Cruz will retain his title vs. Joseph Benavidez via Decision

StrikeForce: Houston Thoughts

          VS

         King Mo Lawal                                                                  Rafael Cavalcante

The card is as follows
Muhammed Lawal (c) vs. Rafael Cavalcante (Light Heavyweight Championship)
Ronaldo Souza vs. Tim Kennedy (Middleweight Championship)
KJ Noons vs. Jorge Gurgel
Bobby Lashley vs. Chad Griggs

Now I thought there was going to be a 8 man tournament for the Middleweight title but I guess not. Also I do not think I will be able to watch this show because I believe its on my Super channel which I do not have. But I will post the results even if I don't watch it. So who do I want to win?

1) I am a fan of Bobby Lashley I used to watch him on Raw and so with that I am picking Lashley with a Kimura or maybe a tko. I don't even know who Chad Griggs is so I could end up being surprised

2) I am picking KJ Noons to a 3 round decision over Jorge Gurgel.

3) So with both of them having most of there wins coming from submissions I would think it would be a tko or decision and with that I am picking Ronaldo Souza with a 5th Decision over Tim Kennedy.

4)I am going with Muhammed Lawal in this fight vs. Rafael Cavalcante and the outcome from looking at the pictures will be a ko of some kind. The thing to note is that Rafael Cavalcante has not been to a Decision yet and the one time he got to the 3rd round he got DQ for an Illegal kick.

I just looked at Strike Force 28 Oct 9th and apparently the Middleweight tournament is now for the number one contender because I guess having someone able to lose the title sells more? What ever its strike force they don't have to make sense have Fedor fight Overeem.

Saints Row 2 Review

Now to start things off I have played the first one and this is my second time playing the second one. I have to say that these games are not hard but they are fun to really get the feeling that you own this town which is the point of the game. The story in the first game is that you are a new gang member and you are trying to take of the town. In the second your gang has fallen apart and other gangs have taken over and the town has forgotten who the saints are. So your goal is to take back your town and make the city remember you. Before I even started the game I beat all the side missions and then started and ran through the game in under a day.  I liked using the duel pistols and smg's and mostly drove cars. I had a hard time flying the planes from time to time.

One thing I have to point out is this game glitches a lot and I don't mean like once a week I mean save every time you do something because it might feel like stopping. But I will say this time I played it, it wasn't so bad there was maybe 2-3 times it froze and then there was a time I got shot up into the sky and hit the invisible wall in the sky that made me fall back to earth. (it seems common in sand box games to have this glitch it happened to my brother in crackdown 2) While driving stuff that should stop you car from going do and something stop them to the point of them flipping. Sidewalks would sometimes crash my motorcycle while other times would be fine. Planes would hit buildings and bounce off while other times would stick to it like glue and then explode.  I remember in the first one when my car vanished while I was driving it making me have to restart the game.

Anyways I know that seems like this game is broken but trust me even if these do happen to you this game is still a blast and I would tell any sandbox fan to seriously check this game out its like a old school Grand Theft Auto.

Clash of the Titans (1981) Review

So I had never watched but heard a lot about this movie Clash of the Titans and so I wanted to finally watch it before watching the remake. For me I have to watch the original before even thinking of watching the remake. I was going to get it on Blu-Ray but it was more then I felt like spending so I picked up the new release of the standard DVD version for six dollars. I have to say it was a alright film. The big thing for me was the special effects done by the master himself Ray Harryhausen which are outstanding. The funny thing is I always thought this film was older then it really is. The Ray Harryhausen footage is really dated in that its really dark a scratched. I would love to see maybe a Ray Harryhausen Criterion Box set I think it would be amazing. I know if they did I would be buying it right away. For special features there is a cast thing where it shows the other movies they have been in. A Conversation with Ray Harryhausen, Map of Myths and Monsters and a Theatrical trailer. The audio was kinda annoying the talking was really hard to hear and so I would turn it up but the sound effects would end up being way to loud to the point where a women screaming scared the shit out of me. My favorite animation had to be the Kraken that thing was bad ass or the Medusa's snake hair. Either way for six dollars you can not go wrong with Clash of the Titans (1981) Now time to watch the remake.

The special feature of the actors and there other work even though it shows a list of people you can only click on Harry Hamlin (Perseus) Laurence Olivier (Zeus) and Ray Harryhausen (Special effects) which sucks I wanted to click on Ursula Andress (Aphrodite) or Judi Bowker (Andromeda) but I guess that is what IMDB is for.

The Conversation with Ray Harryhausen was a good extra but I would like to watch him making a scene. I heard there's something like that in Jason and the Argonauts.

The Map of Myths and Monsters is a two minute kinda like fun fact on each effects character.

I almost forgot the music in the movie is wonder full

The Wages of Fear Criterion #36

So last night I finally watched The Wages of Fear and It was a really good movie. The movie is about 4 guys driving two trucks filled with nitroglycerin that can explode at anytime for $2000 which at the time is a ton of money. It's presented in 1.33:1 aspect ratio which when I was going to watch it I didn't realize that. Also there is a lot of scratches and damage to the film so I don't know if the Blu-ray version is worth it. Other then that thought this film was really good. The DVD cover is kind of a spoiler because that is a picture of the end of the movie. I like the characters in the film and there relationships with each other. The humor in the film was really good . One thing that shocked me was how the "hero" treated that women like a object in the movie which I am not used to. My favorite part of the movie was the rock scene I thought that was very good.

Spoiler:
Now for the ending of the film I thought that him having the nitroglycerin in the truck he had to watch the road and ever bump in it to make sure he didn't die and so at the end he didn't pay attention to anything and it ended up costing him. I might be over thinking it but I think the ending means that even if there's nothing in front of you, you should all ways look where your going

UFC 117 Results

To start off Thiago Silva was hurt during his training camp and could not fight on the card.

1) I wanted Roy Nelson to win and Junior dos Santos won via 3rd round decision and he now gets to fight for the title after Cain fights Brock.

2) I guessed Matt Hughes would win and wow he won via wicked sub that was shocking. Matt won't die.

3) I picked Clay Guida to win and and he won via sub (broken jaw)

4) I picked Jon Fitch to win and Fitch won via 3rd round decision. Even tho everyone was booing at one point it was a good enjoyable fight. I wanted Fitch to win because I don't think thiago should get another title fight.

5) I knew Anderson Silva would win and the thing I am looking at is if it will be a boring fight because once again they are making him fight a guy that only wants to do one thing take him down. The outcome of the fight is Anderson Silva sub Chale in the 5th round. One thing I will say is that this was a hard fight to watch and its not the fact that I am a fan of his but watching a pound for pound fighter getting owned was hard. I have never yelled at the end of a fight and at the end of this I was on my feet screaming so outstanding. I thought it was going to be another decision. Hats off to Chale for a outstanding show I just didn't like the trash talk but he all most backed it up.

On a side note I am not sure but I think Anderson Silva walked out with Steven Seagal but not 100% on that. If it was thats wicked.

UFC Live: Jones vs. Matyushenko results

Jon Jones vs. Vladimir Matyushenko
Mark Muñoz vs. Yushin Okami
John Howard vs. Jake Ellenberger
Tyson Griffin vs. Takanori Gomi

1)  Now I wanted Takanori Gomi to win but I thought Griffin would win with wrestle but Takanori Gomi Knocked out Tyson Griffin in the frist. This started the night off great I really love that Gomi won and by KO at 1:04 in the frist. I was thinking he was going to be another one of the great fighters that couldn't make it in UFC but maybe he can. Could Gomi be the Lightweight Champion?

2) Now I went with a guess and picked Jake Ellenberger beating John Howard with a 3 round decision and it's not over yet but it's getting really close. Its Ellenberger 2 rounds and its going into the 3rd. Hopefully Ellenberger to win. It ended with a doctor stoppage. His eye was closed and couldn't see. So Jake Ellenberger win in the 3rd due to doctor stoppage. 2:21 in the 3rd when stopped.

3) Yushin Okami I thought would defeat Mark Muñoz with a 3 round decision. If Yushin Okami doesn't win the 3rd round decision I will be shocked. It should be 29-28 10-9 9-10 10-9 Yushin Okami. The winner is by split decision Yushin Okami thank god it was okami but you kidding me I am so fed up with this wrestling shit he had one fucking takedown in the frist won the 2nd and did nothing in the 3 how can that be a split I hate takedowns.

4) I wanted Vladimir Matyushenko to win but I thought that Jon Jones would tko him in the 2nd. Jon jones tko Vlad with a crucifix in the 1st

So with that I got the frist one wrong and that's all so I got 3/4. But I did want gomi to win so to me I got the outcomes I wanted. I really like Jon jones and can wait till he fights someone like Tito or randy or someone that's up there.
